Why Can’t I Be Disciplined With Food

Today’s Truth
If Jesus died to set me free, and the Holy Spirit produces self-control, why do I still feel so out of control when it comes to food? It feels defeating. Shameful. Even confusing. But it’s also a sacred question—because it shows you long for the freedom Jesus promised. And that longing is a sign of life, not failure.
Devotional Teaching
Jesus did die to set you free from bondage—including any place where food has become a master instead of a gift. And yes, the fruit of the Spirit does include self-control. But freedom and fruit don’t always come instantly. They grow as we abide in Him—not as we strive harder. Struggle doesn’t mean failure. It often means you're walking out your freedom one step at a time. Many of us use food to soothe deeper wounds, escape pain, or reward ourselves because we’ve learned (often in childhood) to associate it with comfort or control. But here's the truth: the struggle isn’t a sign that you’re weak—it’s a sign that God is calling you to something deeper. He’s not just after your behavior—He’s after your heart. And He wants to heal the root, not just prune the fruit. Self-control is not something we white-knuckle our way into. It’s a fruit of the Spirit. That means it grows out of intimacy with God—not from shaming ourselves into change. So if you feel like you 'can’t be disciplined,' maybe you’ve just been trying to grow spiritual fruit through natural effort. Let today be the beginning of a new journey—not of striving, but of abiding. Not of fixing yourself, but of letting God heal you, lead you, and teach you new ways to live.
Today’s Prayer
Father, I’m tired of feeling defeated. I know You’ve set me free through Jesus, but I feel stuck when it comes to food. I want to walk in freedom—not just in theory, but in my actual daily choices. I surrender this area to You again today. Show me where I’ve believed lies. Heal what food has tried to fix. Grow the fruit of self-control in me as I abide in You. I don’t want to just 'try harder' anymore—I want to live from a place of rest, connection, and truth. Help me see progress through grace, not perfection. Thank You that You are patient and You never give up on me. I trust You to finish what You started in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Self-control is not something I force. It grows as I stay connected to Jesus. I am not broken beyond repair—I am in process, and God is working in me. Shame is not my motivator. Grace is. And grace is what will carry me through.
