Abstinence or Moderation
Finding Your Path to Freedom
“Everything is permissible for me—but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me—but I will not be mastered by anything.” – 1 Corinthians 6:12
Today’s Truth
One of the most important decisions you’ll make on your food freedom journey is this: Should I practice abstinence, or can I walk in moderation? There is no one-size-fits-all answer. What works beautifully for one person might feel suffocating or unsustainable for another. The key is learning how God wired you—and what actually leads you toward freedom, not bondage.
Devotional Teaching
Abstinence means completely avoiding certain foods—often sugar, flour, or trigger foods—because they create uncontrollable urges or addictive cycles. Moderation means setting Spirit-led boundaries that allow for flexibility, balance, and mindfulness. How do you know which is right for you? Ask yourself:- Can I eat a small portion without spiraling into more?- Do I spend most of my mental energy resisting, managing, or negotiating with this food?- When I eat this food, do I feel empowered—or defeated? Neither approach is holier. Freedom isn’t found in abstinence or moderation—it’s found in obedience to the Spirit. God may call you to a season of abstinence to break a stronghold—or He may teach you to walk in moderation with grace and wisdom. The key is clarity, surrender, and the power of decision. Once you know your path, commit to it with peace—not fear. Whatever your choice, remember: food is not the enemy. Confusion is. Ask God for discernment—and move forward in confidence.
Today’s Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me discern the right path for me. Show me if I need to abstain from certain foods or if You’re calling me to moderation. I don’t want to follow trends—I want to follow Your Spirit. Give me the courage to make a clear decision and the strength to walk in it. Free me from comparison or fear of doing it wrong. I trust that You are guiding me into truth and freedom. Amen.
Truth Journaling
Lie I’m believing: “If I don’t do what worked for someone else, I’m doing it wrong.”
Truth:“Each of you should be fully convinced in your own mind… whatever you do, do it for the Lord.” – Romans 14:5–6 (paraphrased)
Lie I’m believing: “If I choose abstinence, I’ll feel deprived. If I choose moderation, I’ll lose control.”
Truth: “Everything is permissible for me—but I will not be mastered by anything.” – 1 Corinthians 6:12
New Mindset to Carry Forward
There is no one-size-fits-all path to food freedom. I will seek God’s wisdom, choose with confidence, and walk by the Spirit—not by fear, pressure, or comparison.
Reflection Questions
1. Have I tried to follow someone else’s plan instead of seeking God’s direction for me?
2. Which approach—abstinence or moderation—brings me closer to peace and freedom?
3. What foods consistently trigger unhealthy patterns in my life?
4. What decision do I feel God inviting me to make today—and how can I move forward with confidence?
