Quieting the Noise

“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace.” – Isaiah 55:12

Today’s Truth

Sometimes the hardest part of this journey isn’t knowing what to do—it’s knowing how to hear God clearly about it. Fear of “forever,” the pull of cravings, and the swirl of shame or panic can drown out His voice. But the noise isn’t proof that God is silent—it’s proof that our flesh is loud. A season of abstaining can quiet that noise and give us the space to hear Him more clearly.

Devotional Teaching

One of the most common struggles in food freedom is trying to discern whether God is calling you to abstinence, moderation, or a hybrid path. But often, when sugar and flour have had a stronghold in our lives, our hearts and minds are clouded. Fear says, “I could never live without it.” Cravings shout, “You’ll be miserable.” Shame whispers, “You’ll just fail again.”

No wonder it feels impossible to hear God’s direction.

That’s why a season of abstinence is so powerful. It’s not about vowing “never again.” It’s about giving your heart and mind a break from the noise so you can listen. As your body stabilizes and cravings quiet, your spirit becomes more sensitive to His gentle leading.

It’s also important to remember: feeling fear or anxiety doesn’t automatically mean it isn’t God. More often, those emotions rise because our flesh resists surrender. The truth is, if God calls you to abstain—even just for a season—He will also provide the grace to walk it out.

You don’t need to settle your entire food future today. All you need to do is surrender this season to Him and trust that His peace will lead you step by step.

Today’s Prayer

Father, sometimes the noise inside me feels louder than Your voice. I confess my fears about giving things up and the way cravings and shame pull me in different directions. Help me not to confuse fear with Your leading. If You’re calling me to abstain for a season, give me the grace and courage to step into it—not forever, but for today. Quiet the noise in my mind and heart so I can hear You clearly. Thank You that Your leading is marked by peace and not panic. I choose to trust You one step at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

New Mindset to Carry Forward

I don’t have to figure out forever today. A season of abstinence is not about deprivation—it’s about creating space to hear God more clearly. His peace, not my fear, will guide me forward.

Reflection Questions

1.      What fears rise up when I think about abstaining from sugar and flour?

2.      How might those fears be more about my flesh’s resistance than God’s voice?

3.      What would it look like to trust God with this season instead of worrying about forever?

4.      Where have I seen His peace show up when I made space to listen before?

Journal Reflection

Write your own prayer or truth journaling response. Ask the Holy Spirit: “Lord, what do You want me to know about this season?” Write whatever comes—whether it feels small, simple, or surprising.
