Abiding, Not Striving
(Even with Food)
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5
Today’s Truth
Trying harder to fix our food issues doesn’t work. We’ve tried willpower, plans, and punishment. But Jesus didn’t invite us into striving—He invited us to abide. Abiding means staying connected to Jesus, like a branch to the vine. It’s not passive—but it’s peaceful. It’s not hustle—it’s trust. And it’s exactly what brings transformation.
Devotional Teaching
Most of us try to change our food habits by trying harder. We say, 'Tomorrow I’ll be better.' We white-knuckle our way through the day, and when we fall, we feel like failures. But Jesus says: “Apart from me you can do nothing.” Nothing means nothing. Even your food choices. So what does abiding look like when it comes to food? It looks like checking in with God before checking the pantry. It looks like inviting Him into your grocery list and your cravings. It looks like asking, 'Lord, what does my body truly need right now?' instead of 'What am I allowed to eat?' It looks like turning to prayer instead of turning to snacks when you're stressed. Abiding doesn’t mean being perfect. It means being present—with Jesus. It means remaining in His love, receiving His wisdom, and walking with Him meal by meal. As you abide, self-control begins to grow. You’ll start making choices not out of fear or shame, but from peace and connection. You don’t have to strive for fruit—it will come.
Today’s Prayer
Jesus, You said if I abide in You, I will bear much fruit. That includes self-control with food. But so often, I try to fix myself without You. I strive and fail, and I end up discouraged. Help me to slow down and stay close to You. Teach me to invite You into my food decisions, my cravings, and my emotions. Let my choices flow from a place of peace—not punishment. Thank You that You’re patient and gentle with me. I want to walk with You in this journey, one step at a time. Amen.

New Mindset to Carry Forward
Abiding isn’t weak—it’s wise. Real change comes from staying connected to Jesus, not controlling everything. I will learn to rest in Him and let Him lead me—even in my eating.
