Day 9 — Peace in the Storm

“Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”Mark 4:39

Summary

Storms are a part of life—unexpected trials, emotional turbulence, or seasons where everything feels out of control. In Mark 4, the disciples faced a physical storm so fierce they thought they would drown. But Jesus stood up and spoke three simple words:

“Peace, be still.”

And creation obeyed.

Advent reminds us that Jesus did not come to remove us from storms, but to step into them with us, carrying a peace stronger than any wind or wave.

Insight for Today — When Fear Roars Louder Than Faith

Storms reveal what we’re looking at.

In Mark 4, the disciples stared at the waves and panicked.
In Matthew 14, Peter actually walked on water—doing the impossible—until he shifted his gaze.

“But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid… and beginning to sink.” — Matthew 14:30

Peter didn’t sink because the storm got bigger.
He sank because his focus shifted.

Fear grows when we stare at the storm.
Peace grows when we stare at Jesus.

Your circumstances may be loud, but His voice is louder.

Going Deeper — Peace Is a Person, Not a Condition

There are two kinds of storms in Scripture:

1. The storms around us

Winds we cannot control.
Situations we cannot fix.
Waves that rise without warning.

Jesus speaks to these storms:
“Peace, be still.”

2. The storms within us

Anxious thoughts.
Fear of the unknown.
Unsettled hearts.

Jesus speaks within these storms:
“Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27)

Whether the storm is external or internal, the answer is the same:
Fix your eyes on Him.

Peace is not found when the waves stop…
Peace is found when Jesus becomes the focus.

Pointing to Jesus

Jesus is the calm in the chaos.
The steady hand beneath the sinking disciple.
The voice that speaks order into confusion.
The presence that never leaves the boat—even when the waves rise high.

The Prince of Peace is not intimidated by storms.
He walks on top of the very things that terrify us.

Reflection/Prayer

Jesus, when storms rise around me or inside of me, help me fix my eyes on You. Speak “Peace, be still” over every place of turmoil in my heart. Lift me when I feel like I’m sinking. Teach me to trust Your presence more than I fear the waves. Amen.

Application Question

Where has your focus shifted from Jesus to the storm? What is one practical way you can turn your eyes back toward Him today?
