When You Resist Movement

Changing How You Think About Exercise

‍ ‍

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” – Hebrews 12:11

Today’s Truth

Even when we know exercise is good for our bodies, many of us still resist it. We put it off. We dread it. We may even feel guilty for not doing it—but that guilt rarely turns into motivation. Why does this happen? Because somewhere along the way, we’ve linked movement with punishment, performance, or pressure—not joy, strength, or stewardship. But God offers us a new mindset: one rooted in grace and purpose.

‍ ‍

Devotional Teaching

For many, exercise has been tangled up in body shame, rigid expectations, or a history of failure. Instead of seeing it as a gift, we see it as a chore—or worse, as something that “proves” our worth. But what if we reframed it?

‍ ‍

- Instead of punishment, see it as partnership—with your body and with God.

‍ ‍

- Instead of performance, see it as praise—moving your body because you can, not because you must.

‍ ‍

- Instead of pressure, see it as peace—caring for your health as an act of worship.

‍ ‍

Resistance often comes from inner beliefs like:

‍ ‍

- 'I’m too tired.'- 'It won’t make a difference.'

‍ ‍

- 'I’ll never be consistent.

‍ ‍

'But these are just thoughts—not truths. And when you challenge those thoughts and choose even a few minutes of movement, you begin creating new pathways—not just physically, but mentally and spiritually. You don’t need a perfect fitness plan. You need a fresh perspective. God created your body to move. And movement—done in love and grace—can be an act of freedom.

‍ ‍

Today’s Prayer

‍ ‍

Heavenly Father, You gave me this body as a gift. Help me see movement not as punishment, but as praise. Show me what joyful stewardship looks like for my body in this season. I confess the lies I’ve believed—that I’m too far gone, too tired, or too inconsistent. Replace those lies with truth. Help me take small steps, with Your strength, and celebrate progress over perfection. Amen.

Truth Journaling

‍ ‍

Lie I’m believing: 'Exercise is too hard. I’ll never stick with it.'

‍ ‍

Truth: 'I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.' – Philippians 4:13

‍ ‍

Lie I’m believing: 'Exercise is a punishment for my body.'

‍ ‍

Truth:'My body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. I honor God by caring for it.' – 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

‍ ‍New Mindset to Carry Forward

Movement is a gift, not a punishment. I don’t need to do it perfectly—I just need to start. I will move my body in ways that build strength, peace, and praise.

‍ ‍

Practical Tip: Do It First

‍ ‍

One simple mindset shift that helps is this: do it first.  Just like tithing the first of your income or giving God the first part of your day, starting your morning with movement—before excuses pile up—can shift your whole mindset. Getting the hard thing out of the way not only reduces dread—it builds confidence.  It’s empowering to look back and say, “I did the thing I least wanted to do.” It sets the tone for the rest of your day and reminds you that you're stronger than your feelings. The longer you wait, the louder the resistance grows. But when you act early, you reclaim your power, quiet the noise, and walk in discipline and peace.
