It Is Written

Answering Temptation with Truth

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” – Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7 (NIV)

Today’s Truth

Jesus was tempted. Not just abstractly—but physically. He was hungry, vulnerable, and alone when Satan whispered, “Turn these stones into bread.”

But Jesus didn’t argue. He didn’t explain. He didn’t rationalize. He answered with truth. “It is written…” And we can do the same.

Devotional Teaching

Temptation often catches us off guard because we try to fight it in our emotions. We reason with it. We try to manage it. We say things like,

●      “I shouldn’t…”

●      “I’ll try not to…”

●      “Maybe just a little…”

But Jesus didn’t “try.” He declared. He met each lie with truth. Three times in the wilderness, He was tempted—and three times, He answered: “It is written.”

●      When Satan tempted Him to use food for comfort, He said:

“It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone…” (Matthew 4:4)

●      When Satan tempted Him to test God’s faithfulness, He said:

“It is written: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” (Matthew 4:7)

●      When Satan tempted Him with power and false reward, He said:

“It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.” (Matthew 4:10)

Jesus modeled what spiritual warfare looks like: not passive resistance, but bold, decisive truth. You don’t need to fear temptation. You don’t have to feel weak in front of it. You can respond to that urge, that craving, that emotional pull with boldness:

“It is written…”

Speak it out loud if you need to. Remind your flesh who’s in charge. Use Scripture like a sword—because that’s exactly what it is. (Ephesians 6:17) When you answer temptation with truth, you do more than resist—you take authority.

Today’s Prayer

Jesus, thank You for showing me how to face temptation. You didn’t waver. You didn’t argue. You simply stood in truth. Help me do the same. When cravings come, when emotional eating tempts me, when I want to quit or give in—remind me to speak what is written. Train me to be strong in the Spirit, quick to recall truth, and bold to resist. I don’t fight alone. I stand in You. And in Your name, I overcome. Amen.

Truth Journaling

Lie I’m believing: “This is too strong—I can’t resist.”

Truth: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7

Lie I’m believing: “I need food to feel better right now.”

Truth: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” – Matthew 4:4

Lie I’m believing: “Just this once won’t matter.”

Truth: “It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.” – Matthew 4:10

New Mindset to Carry Forward

I don’t have to entertain temptation—I can answer it. God’s Word is my weapon. When I speak the truth, the enemy loses ground. I can say boldly and clearly, “It is written.”

Reflection Questions

3.      What temptation tends to sneak up on me the most?

4.      What specific Scripture could I memorize or speak in those moments?

5.      How have I tried to manage temptation emotionally instead of spiritually?

6.      What would it look like to resist with boldness and finality, like Jesus did?

Journal Reflection

Write down a few “It is written” statements using your favorite Scriptures. Think about the lies you’re most tempted to believe and write a matching truth to declare next time. Practice saying them out loud, boldly and without apology.
